Rechargeable devices built around a replaceable pod, sitting between the simplicity of a disposable and the control of a full mod.
About pod system
A pod system separates the parts that wear out from the parts that do not. The battery and chipset are kept; the pod — which holds the liquid and, in most designs, the coil — is replaced when the flavour drops off. That single design decision is what brings the running cost down compared with disposables, at the price of a little maintenance.
Pods come in two broad types. Closed pods are pre-filled and swapped whole, which keeps things simple but limits you to the flavours that manufacturer sells. Open pods are filled from any bottle of e-liquid, which is where the real cost saving and flavour range appear. Most of the range here is open-system.
Coil resistance is the specification that changes how a device feels. Higher-resistance coils, generally above 1.0 ohm, give a tighter mouth-to-lung draw and suit higher-strength salts. Lower-resistance coils below 0.8 ohm pass more power, produce more vapour and a looser restricted direct-lung draw, and pair with lower-strength, higher-VG liquid.
How to choose
- Open or closed pods
- Open pods refill from any bottle and cost far less to run. Closed pods are quicker and cleaner but tie you to one manufacturer’s flavour list.
- Coil resistance
- Match resistance to the draw you want. Above 1.0 ohm for a cigarette-like draw with salts; below 0.8 ohm for more vapour with lower-strength liquid.
- Battery capacity
- Around 800 mAh generally covers a day of moderate use. Heavier use, or lower-resistance coils, will want 1,000 mAh or more.
- Coil availability
- Coils are proprietary. Before buying a device, check its coils are stocked — an orphaned device is an expensive paperweight.
Frequently asked questions
How often should a pod or coil be replaced?
Most last one to two weeks with regular use, though sweet and dark liquids shorten that considerably because sugars caramelise on the coil. The reliable signal is taste: when flavour turns muted or harsh, the coil is finished.
Can any e-liquid be used in an open pod system?
Any liquid will physically fit, but the VG/PG ratio should match the coil. High-VG liquid is too thick for narrow, high-resistance MTL coils and will cause dry hits. For pod systems, a 50/50 blend is the safest general choice unless the coil is below about 0.8 ohm.
Why does a new coil taste burnt straight away?
Almost always because it was not primed. A new coil needs liquid dripped directly onto the exposed wicking material, then a filled pod left to stand for five to ten minutes so the wick saturates fully before the first draw.
What does the ohm rating on a coil mean?
It is electrical resistance. Lower resistance draws more power, producing more heat, more vapour and a warmer, looser draw. Higher resistance produces less vapour and a tighter draw that more closely resembles a cigarette.
Is a pod system cheaper than disposables?
Over time, generally yes. There is an upfront cost for the device, after which you buy only liquid and coils rather than a complete device each time. How quickly that pays back depends on how heavily you use it.
